about the line
Onyx feather was created to merge two desires. The first is to create eclectic art that reuses disregarded items. The second is to make a positive impact in the lives of people who have been forgotten. It is a jewelry line that fuses overlooked vintage pieces with semi-precious stones and other modern materials to create a timeless adornment that transforms a once disregarded piece into an unforgettable one. Each collection is inspired by a captivating city. These cities range from reflecting the symphonious skies of a Parisian morning, to capturing the vivid nights of Rio de Janeiro, and the lines continue to grow and change every season.True to its cosmopolitan identity, some of the vintage pieces are acquired from local DC and New York flea markets, artists, and estate sales while others are shipped from countries like Japan, Singapore and Peru. The result: each Onyx Feather necklace is a customized piece of handmade art that unifies the past and present.I decided to directly apply the concept of spotlighting what has been overlooked by society to the way Onyx Feather would advocate for children, specifically former child soldiers in war-torn countries that have been forgotten. This is why fifteen percent of every piece you purchase goes to Invisible Children, a dedicated non-profit that uses film, creativity and social action to end the use of child soldiers. This line wouldn't be possible without the incredibly talented volunteers (below) that supported me in wonderfully innovative ways and made my daydream a reality. Thank you. Fifteen percent of every necklace sold is deposited into the Legacy Scholarship Fund of Invisible Children; a nonprofit that uses film, creativity, and social action to work towards ending the use of child soldiers.This fund gives children who have been directly affected by the Ugandan war an opportunity to be awarded with high school and university scholarships. It also provides them with mentors to guide them through the process. I picked Invisible Children for three reasons:1. Their unique approach. They use a mix of creativity, innovation, realism and hard work to tackle a long-term issue.2. Their philosophy. I subscribe to their theory that education is the key to lasting peace. Rather than only providing temporary relief for conflict victims, IC has decided to invest in the lives of these children by giving them the tools to become leaders that can make a difference.3. can I commission onyx feather for custom pieces?Yes, we work with clients to create customized pieces. we also fulfill customized wedding orders. Rates vary depending on the type of stones used and the price of the vintage pieces. For Washington, DC clientele in-person appointments are available. For more information check out the services page.how long does a custom order piece take to create?Wedding orders generally take 5-6 weeks. (It takes time to find a cohesive group of one-of-a-kind vintage pieces.) For standard custom orders it varies depending on how many orders are underway at that particular time.does onyx feather do replications? No. Every onyx feather is unique and can't be reproduced; however, if you see a piece you really like, send an email and perhaps we can work towards creating another one with different components but a similar concept. how does shipping work?There is a standard $5 flat rate for shipping necklaces and $3 for earrings (this includes tracking). Each necklace ships out within 1-2 days of purchase (via fed-ex) and arrives creatively packaged in signature Onyx Feather style. what is the return policy?A customer can receive store credit (for the amount of the purchased item) within 14 days of purchase towards other items in the store. Please note there are no exchanges for pieces that have been altered.what is your repair policy?Onyx feather offers six months of complimentary repair. Please bear in mind some pieces are delicate and require careful handling, while others are less fragile and more rugged. All major components of the necklace are required for repair. After six months there will be a fee connected with this service.do you fix broken jewelry?Only Onyx Feather pieces. However, if you’d like that old, broken necklace transformed into an Onyx Feather style piece shoot an email to inquiries_onyxfeatheronline.com.what materials do you use?The sky is the limit and it differs from city to city. Some cities are mainly semi-precious stones and vintage brooches, connectors, and clasps. Other cities might be linen, rope, hat pins, beeswax and bubblegum. Every Onyx Feather necklace purchased includes a list of materials and jewelry care information. (Kidding about the gum.)what are “vintage finds?”They are 100 percent vintage pieces found on Onyx Feather vintage buying trips that I can’t incorporate into a line I’m working on but also can’t walk away from. Onyx Feather provides two types of custom orders: standard and wedding party orders. For wedding orders I work with the bride to create either a wedding piece or a cohesive group of unique necklaces that compliment the style of her bridesmaid dresses and the general aesthetic of her wedding. Clients are encouraged to share their ideas and inspiration in order to achieve a successful collaboration. For clientele located in the Washington, DC area in-person appointments are available.
